Golf Cart History

 

The very first 18-hole golf course in the United States is widely considered to be a course built on a former sheep farm in Downers Grove, Illinois, in 1893. For many years, golfers simply walked their clubs around the fairways and greens or relied on caddies who would do so for them. In hot weather, this could be arduous. Walking could also be difficult or impossible for older players or those with disabilities. Golf carts began to spring up during the 20th century to amend this.

Club Car® Beginnings

 

In 1962, Bill Stevens, Jr. purchased the Landreath Machine company based in Houston, Texas, and turned it into Club Car, now based in his hometown of Augusta, Georgia. The first cart with a steering wheel had rolled off the company’s assembly lines in 1960, making travel across the course simpler and faster than ever before. 

 

Stevens, Jr. and his son worked on designs and drove their cart from Augusta to the 1962 PGA show in Dunedin, Florida, over the course of six days to demonstrate how reliable these vehicles could be. Over the next few decades, Club Cars improved even more, with additional seating, storage compartments and roofs making the ride more comfortable and practical for players.

 

Utility Vehicles

 

Club Car expanded their inventory during the 1980s to include utility vehicles. Their initial designs were altered golf carts with cargo boxes welded onto the rear for operators to use as course maintenance vehicles. From here, the company developed the Carryall II vehicle in 1985 as a means of transport for those on college campuses and in manufacturing. The Carryall line has continued into the 21st century, becoming more efficient and powerful with each design.
